Opportunities (W.C. 1 May)

1. RTS London – Production in your pocket

Join RTS London for a practical masterclass on how to make broadcast-quality content when your only tool is your mobile phone.

Back by popular demand after her sold-out 2019 session, Deirdre Mulcahy, news camerawoman, freelance producer, and for 12 years, Senior Video & Mobile Journalism Trainer for the BBC Academy puts down her trusty Sony FS5 to pass on her top tips for using your smartphone as a professional camera.

Deirdre will show you how to produce broadcast-quality content cheaply and quickly, covering everything from the right camera angles, lighting, and workflows to the best apps for video production, and, last but definitely not least, audio. She’ll also touch on how you can edit while on the go.

If you have a great idea but no money to shoot it, need a teaser for a commissioner without development funding, or have a story that simply must be told right now, then this very interactive evening is for you. No fancy kit or cameras are needed, just your smartphone and a passion for content. In the age of TikTok and social media journalism, these skills are more important than ever!

Please note this session will be a practical workshop so bring your fully charged smartphone and, if you have one, a selfie stick and earbuds.

Producer: David Thomas

About Deirdre:
Deirdre is a highly motivated and experienced trainer. Having left the BBC after 12 years as a Camera/Editor/Journalism trainer, she is now delivering bespoke training in the commercial market. She has developed a brilliant workshop to deliver 1st class smartphone shooting skills, which is always very well received.

She is now delivering vlogging skills to marketing/comms teams and lecturing at the Met Film School and the University of West London to continue connecting with young storytellers of the future. She has also acted as a digital storytelling trainer on projects in Ukraine, Somalia, Nigeria and Nairobi, focused on producing quality short-form video for social media.

The Royal Television Society are thrilled to announce the 2023 window for submissions for the RTS Bursary Scheme is now open. The submission window will close on the 29 June 2023.

We would very much appreciate if you could share this news and the below information with your network of students – specifically those who are about to start university in autumn 2023, or those currently in their first year of undergraduate study.

The application form can be found here.

The RTS runs three pioneering schemes – the TV Production and Journalism Bursary, the Digital Innovation Bursary and the Steve Hewlett Scholarship. In addition to the core schemes, the RTS introduced the Beryl Vertue Scholarship in 2022, to support an applicant with an interest in producing.

All Bursaries are awarded to talented students from lower-income backgrounds studying an undergraduate degree or HND Level 5 or 6. We will consider candidates studying all subjects: including but not limited to TV Production and Journalism; Humanities and Social Sciences; and STEM related courses. What is important is an evident interest in pursuing a career in television, film or related media industries.

The Bursary provides free RTS membership; industry mentoring; access to the latest events and lectures; and numerous networking opportunities. We also support our Scholars financially, awarding £1000 per academic year of study.

Please refer to the RTS Guide to applying for a Bursary for more information, as well as our Bursary Terms and Conditions.

If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to get in contact with RTS.
