The series of sessions and Q&As will bring together film, games and tv practitioners alongside new creative talent to give you direct access to the industry and an opportunity to hear from some of the best in the business. Whether you’re a graduate looking to take those first steps or you’ve already got credits under your belt, we’ve got a session for you. 2. EUROVISION 2023 – MEET THE TEAM BEHIND THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH

As the BBC continues its preparations to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2023, ensure your ticket is booked to the RTS’ debrief with the elite senior production team tasked with bringing the live Semi-Finals and the Grand Final to the world stage.
Kate Phillips (Director of Unscripted, and Eurovision Lead for the BBC) will be joined by BBC Studios Entertainment & Music’s Lee Smithurst (Head of Show), James O’Brien (Executive in Charge of Production) and Nikki Parsons (Lead Director) to discuss the creative, technical and logistical feat behind delivering the world’s biggest music event to a global audience of over 160 million.
Quizzing panellists on how they united to celebrate Ukraine’s victory as well as UK creativity will be Eurovision Turquoise Carpet Opening Ceremony presenter and proud Liverpudlian, Sam Quek.
Panellists
- Kate Phillips, Director of Unscripted (BBC): Kate is responsible for the overall commissioning strategy and delivery of the BBC’s full range of unscripted content, including Entertainment, Factual, Daytime, Events and of course Eurovision! A lifelong fan of the contest, here she represents the BBC’s core Eurovision team which includes Martin Green (Managing Director) and Rachel Ashdown (Lead Commissioner).
- Lee Smithurst, Head of Show (BBC Studios): Lee takes creative lead on editorial for the three live shows, having worked on five Eurovision contests to date. In recent years, Lee has played an instrumental role in bringing the UK delegation from ‘nil point’ to centre stage. Lee’s wider credits include I Can See Your Voice, Kylie Minogue’s Secret Night and Soccer Aid.
- James O’Brien, Executive in Charge of Production (BBC Studios): James oversees the technical delivery of the Eurovision live shows and broadcast, and all other elements within the venue precinct. James has experience working on large scale events such as MTV Europe Music Awards the London Olympics and Commonwealth Games.
- Nikki Parsons, Lead Director (BBC Studios): Multi-award winning Director Nikki Parsons is lead director for the Eurovision 2023 Grand Final and Semi Finals. Nikki has been Series Director of Strictly Come Dancing since 2006 and most recently was one of the directors on Queen Elizabeth II’s and the Duke of Edinburgh’s funerals.

Sam will be presenting the Eurovision Turquoise Carpet Opening Ceremony and is a key member of the BBC Studios presenting family, the first female Captain on A Question of Sport and now a full-time presenter on Morning Live.

Featuring a collection of films from across the Caribbean that gives UK audiences insight into the evolving identity of contemporary Caribbean cinema. Exploring both individual and shared cultural identities, this selection touches on universal themes pertaining to the human condition. Featuring films from directors such as Kavery Kaul, Ania Freer and José María Cabral.

4. Skip Norman: Here and There

Join the ICA for a special season of films dedicated to the multifaceted, international career of American filmmaker and cinematographer Skip Norman. Featuring premieres of new restorations and newly produced subtitles, Skip Norman: Here and There will be the first retrospective that explores Norman’s multifaceted, international career, bringing his practice as a filmmaker in dialogue with his work as a cinematographer and bridging his time on both sides of the Atlantic.

5. SSFF: London Japan Film Festival 2023
Sat 20 May, 4:00pm; Genesis Cinema
During the 2-day LONDON JAPAN FILM FESTIVAL on 20-21 May 2023, SSFF will give you a birds eye view of what culture in Japan looks like today. The event will be a deep dive into the various aspects that make up Japan, from dance to sushi and documentaries to feature films, complete with a mesmerising premiere of A MAN by Kei Ishikawa, winner of 8 Japanese awards and a look into the young and upcoming filmmakers that are shaking up Japanese cinema.

6. UK Premiere: A Different Score + Q&A

Join Rio Cinema for the UK premiere screening of A Different Score. Filmmaker Anaïs Ngbanzo’s captivating film is the first documentary portrait of composer, pianist, vocalist, and performance artist Julius Eastman a key figure of the American musical avant-garde. The film emphasizes the political aspect of Eastman’s work and the courage he showed in dedicating his life to his music. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Anaïs Ngbanzo and Devonté Hynes.

8. Straight 8 2023 Top 25 – 25 short films made on 25 rolls of Super 8.

Straight 8 is the Super 8 in-camera filmmaking competition. Since 1999, the annual premieres have excited audiences worldwide, in part because the filmmakers also sit in the auditorium, watching their work for the first time. Despite the challenge of editing in-camera without re-takes, the quality is exceptional. The Top 8 films of the 25 are fresh from their Straight 8 premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
