7. MY CHILDHOOD, MY COUNTRY – A SCREENING AND Q&A WITH DIRECTOR PHIL GRABSKY – STUDENT ONLY
Thursday, 2 March, 2023, 13:00-17:00
Location : Jane Austen Lecture Theatre, Solent University, Southampton SO14 0YN United Kingdom
The Royal Television Society invites you to this special screening of Phil Grabsky’s BAFTA winning film, followed by a Q&A with the director.
An epic story of a boy growing up in a land ravaged by war.
Mir and his family form a portrait of embattled Afghanistan that no other film has ever captured. War, politics, poverty, and heartbreak – all seen from the level of a child frolicking in a muddy, bullet-laden pool, playing soccer on a dirt pitch, and forgoing school to work ploughing in the fields, collecting wood from mountain tops, or digging coal in perilous mines, all at subsistence wages to support his family. The innocence and optimism of Mir contrasts with carefully selected contemporary news footage that also offers sobering comments of leading soldiers, politicians, and journalists offering their own insights into what is going wrong and what is going right.

8. Electric Malady + Q&A
Tue, 28 Feb 2023, 6:30 PM, Cinema 1 at ICA
Electric Malady, dir. Marie Lidén, United Kingdom 2022, 84 min., Swedish with English subtitles, 12A
Artist and filmmaker Marie Lidén invites audiences into the isolated world of William, a young man who’s spent a decade reluctantly retreating from modern life. A one-time master’s student and aspiring musician, his adverse reaction to the electrical radiation from our interconnected digital age has led him to a remote cabin in the Swedish wilderness where he’s cut himself off from most forms of technology. But how do you get off the grid when the grid is now everywhere?
Hidden in a foil-encased bedroom, beneath layers of copper-lined fabric, William speaks openly to Lidén about suffering from the condition known as electrosensitivity. Shot partly with a hand-cranked Bolex camera, what emerges is a lyrical and empathetic portrait of loneliness and isolation – and a loving family’s efforts to save their son’s life.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Marie Lidén, hosted by ICA Cinema Curator Nicolas Raffin.
Tickets from £11, half price for Green/Blue Members, £5 for Under 25s.

9. Palimpsest Landscapes Film Programme + Q&A
Thu, 02 Mar 2023, 6:45 PM, Cinema 1 at ICA
Days In Between, dir. Marianna Christofides, Germany / France / Greece 2015, 40 min., English
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Delfina Foundation artist in residence Danae Io and Viviana Chiecchia, Residency Curator at Delfina Foundation.
In partnership with the Delfina Foundation.
Programme
À propos de venise, (Concerning Venice [History Lessons]), dir. Jean-Marie Straub, Switzerland 2014, 24 min., French with English subtitles
The glory and collapse of the grand Republic of Venice: the reasons are numerous, complex, human and all too human. Are these the same ingredients, the mélange that might determine whether the current Europe will survive? And if so, under what conditions? Jean-Marie Straub poses the question in this film, more austere and concentrated than ever.
Days In Between, dir. Marianna Christofides, Germany / France / Greece 2015, 40 min., English
This essay film reflects her recursive engagement to the border regions and topographies of violence and violation. Shot during her journeys to the Balkan region from 2011 to 2015, Christophides approaches post-industrial landscapes, activities and stereotypes assigned to ‘the Balkans’ in a refracted manner that brings forth the omissions and erasures.
Sprouts of a dragon’s teeth, dir. Danae Io, Greece / Netherlands 2023, 9 min., Greek & English subtitles
Between agricultural landscapes, industrial ruins and an overgrown ancient theatre, animals and insects meander in the plains of de-industrialised Thebes, Greece. A group of field workers are getting ready for their lunch break. The relationship between people and land arranges the film, in the form of a poem on autochthony, othering, and myth.
Tickets from £11, half price for Green/Blue Members, £5 for Under 25s.

10. A Woman Is a Woman by Jean-Luc Godard, 1961, 84 min
Saturday 25.02.23, 8:15 pm at Close Up
With A Woman Is a Woman, Jean-Luc Godard presents “a neorealist musical – that is, a contradiction in terms.” A Woman Is a Woman is a sly, playful tribute to – and interrogation of – the American musical comedy, showcasing Godard’s signature wit and intellectual acumen. The film tells the story of exotic dancer Angéla (Anna Karina) as she attempts to have a child with her unwilling lover Émile (Jean-Claude Brialy). In the process, she finds herself torn between him and his best friend Alfred (Jean-Paul Belmondo). A dizzying compendium of colour, humour, and the music of renowned composer Michel Legrand, A Woman Is a Woman finds the young Godard at his warmest and most accessible, revelling in and scrutinizing the mechanics of his great obsession: the cinema.
Showing as part of CLOSE UP CINEMA’s year-long tribute: Au Contraire: Jean-Luc Godard
