1. Sponsorship Success for Film Festivals
Sponsorship expert Jennifer Frees, an experienced trainer who is globally renowned for building one of the most successful partnership programmes in the film festival world at Toronto International Film Festival 2011-2020, will lead the course alongside Catharine Des Forges, ICO Director. Over the course of the last 7 years, Jennifer has trained over 150 festivals through ICO courses alone.
Catharine and the Independent Cinema Office (ICO) have a proven track record, having created and delivered the international gold standard in film festival training, Developing Your Film Festival (DYFF) for 11 years. This new course builds on that expertise with a more specific and intensive training programme on sponsorship and partnerships. Delegates will come away with new contacts, new skills and, most importantly, a practical toolkit for sponsorship to use immediately.

2. BFI Film Academy Lab: Music Documentaries
In this session, Vanessa and Colm will share their career story and discuss some of the ways you can develop a USP (unique selling point) for your film festival or screenings, along with tips and advice for programming music documentaries and working with under-the-radar filmmakers.
Doc’n Roll will be in conversation with Uche Odoh, YFP Presenter, Filmmaker and Photographer.
The session will be hosted by Julia Andrews-Clifford who is the YFP NETWORK Manager where she connects YFPs and cinema venues across the region through professional development and events.

3. Building a Career in Film Programming
The BFI Film Academy December Lab will explore the practicalities, pleasures and challenges of working in film programming.

Being a film programmer is often seen as a dream job, but how do you start a career in this field? What skills are required to be a successful programmer? What is the difference between programming for cinemas and film festivals? And once you have your foot in the door, how do you build your audience and keep them coming back?
12:30pm – 1:30pm: in this session, representatives working in programming for major UK cinemas, film festivals and collectives and those leading and participating in programming courses will offer their tips on how to build a career in film programming.
2pm – 3:30pm: The Showroom Cinema Young Programmers will present a package of short films and a panel discussion, showcasing works from the BFI NETWORK, Film Hub North and the North.
3:30pm – 5pm: we will end the day with free networking drinks! You will have an opportunity to chat to the BFI Film Academy Young Programmers from all over the UK and meet other aspiring young film curators looking to use their passion for film to build programming careers.
This event is part of the Career Ladder strand of BFI Film Academy Labs 2022/23.

4. Steven Arnold: Heavenly Bodies, followed by a Q&A with Vishnu Dass

5. Sheffield DocFest
Following this year’s hugely successful festival, they are delighted to announce the dates for Sheffield DocFest 2023 in which they celebrate our 30th edition.
Next year’s festival will run from Wednesday 14 June to Monday 19 June 2023 and they cannot wait to champion and present the breadth of documentary form – film, television, immersive and art – in the vibrant city of Sheffield next June.
Industry passes are now available for Sheffield DocFest, the UK’s leading documentary festival taking place next year from 14 – 19 June 2023. A super early bird rate is available until Wednesday 7 December

6. This Way Up
This Way Up is the UK independent film exhibition sector’s go-to event for big picture thinking. In-person delegates will be part of a melting pot of new ideas and industry initiatives. Panels, discussions and other events will be hosted at Dundee Contemporary Arts, with a networking event held at the V&A Museum, Dundee. All delegates will also be able to replay session recordings online.

7. Girls In Film X Woman. Life. Freedom

Join Rio Cinema and Girls In Film for a charity screening in support of Iranian people on the forefront of the fight for human rights. Girls in Film and filmmakers Alannah Olivia and Roxy Faridany from Woman. Life. Freedom. came together to organise a screening of short films by Iranian and Kurdish filmmakers in order to raise money and awareness for the fight for human rights & freedoms happening in Iran right now.

8. Together Disability Film Festival 2022

9. Milktea Mixtape: Short Film Showcase

Join Milktea Mixtape for their short film showcase, featuring outstanding performances by British East and Southeast Asian actors. They have curated a programme of six exciting short films followed by a Q&A with some of the filmmakers.

10. FRAMEBURN: Bacurau + Board Games
Hackney Brewery 6:30pm 8 December
Join The Social Cinema for the last instalment of their FRAMEBURN series dedicated to science fiction, future climates and activism. The evening will start with a board game meet-up followed by a screening of Bacurau, Winner of the Jury prize at Cannes 2019, it’s a film that merges many genres and subjects: sci-fi, western, thriller, Brazilian afro-futurism and political analysis, but most of all it’s a film about the power of community.

11. The Voices Film Programme: I’m A Migrant
Bermondsey Project Space 7pm 29 November
Join Floor Five Collective for The Voices Film Programme at Bermondsey Project Space highlighting underrepresented voices in cinema. This November the programme focusses on Race and Identity. I’m Migrant is a short-film series by Iraqi writer and photographer Yamam Nabeel, part of a larger project of photography and written word, focusing on the lives of immigrant and exiled artists, poets and writers from the Arab world and their contribution to western culture.
